THE FIRES IN THE HILLSIDE burned low and were replenished with thick logs, the armed men not caring which trees came down for their comfort, for they intended not to pass this way again. The ancient trees, planted in the days of David, crashed with a groan and were fed upon by the axes of their enemies. No cooks or attendants accompanied this group of rogues. They had heard an old voice calling to them and followed it, knowing what was to be done, knowing the shepherd stepped away now from his flock. All these wolves moved closer until they were almost upon each other at the base of the mountain. They would set on the palace, and tonight.

They painted their faces by the firelight as the moon rose to power above them. Their eyes became burning coals, embers alive at the center. Dark stripes moved down their cheeks, through hollowed-out places where fat would have been in prosperous times. Their swords had been sharpened until they brought blood from the driest of skin. A chill swept into the camp, and the last of the men was ready. Each knew the cold touch of the master, knew how he loved the warm blood of men.

Silently, they abandoned the fires, moving unseen toward the palace. The clouds parted as if the moon herself would whisper a warning to those that slept within her walls, but a thick and yellowed cloud swept over it, causing shadows to shift and restless servants in the palace to think of days past, or of their mothers, of whatever shreds of happiness they once had.
